Addresses

The Town of Richmond is the Eastern Townships north entry-way to wonderful tourist sites.

Take advantage of your stay and attach yourself to the past by admiring the work of men and women that preceded you in history, and left a vast heritage that is worth being dicovered.

At the beginning of its history, Richmond possessed the most important railway between Québec and Boston.  The importance of the train played a major role in the evolution of the municipality.  Even today the old railway station unfulrs its architectural style with a Motel de la gare.

The Slate Interpretation Centre, the Automobile museum and festival, the old English Sector with its architectural form, the Art Centre , the presbytery and the Ste-Bibiane Church in Richmond all deserve to be visited.  Let yourself dive into the past for a day or two.

Slate and architecture

The people from this region were the first large contributors to the commercial running of slate quarries.  Among approximately 10 slate quarries that were run in the region, the most important quarries were in Melbourne, one was called Walton, and the other New Rockland.  At the end of the 19th century the new Rockland quarry had become the main extraction site for slate in Canada.  The quarry produced 80% of roofing slate on the Canadian market.  The quarry closed in 1924 because less expensive roofing material became available.

In remembrance of thos glorious day, the  Slate Interpretation Centre suggests you to stop by and discover this interesting material of the past.  Exhibitions and demonstrations of the technique of cutting slate are presented all through the year.

You can find many slate roofs on houses in the English Sector of Richmond as well as on the Ste-Bibiane Church.

History and Heritage

The architectural heritage in the region of Richmond stands as a witness to the diverse culture of the four founding fathers:  French, English, Scottish and Irish.  You will find many beautiful homes from the 19th century in the area.  Among others, Richmond has the largest number of historical buildings, with a great variety of architectural styles.  Richmond has the highest number of slate roofs in Québec. .

The English Sector of Richmond has a large number of prestigious homes covered with red brick and slate roofs offering a great heritage value.

The Sainte-Bibiane Church, Mount St-Patrice and the presbytery compose an architectural ensemble worth discovering.

The religious heritage is very important in Richmond.

The Ste-Anne and Richmond-Melbourne United churches show the Anglo-Saxon character of this sector.  The landscape and architectural quality of the buildings in this area are of a huge historical interest.

The oldest Presbyterian Church in the Eastern Townships is St-Andrew’s in the municipality of melbourne.  Built around 1841-1842, the St-Andrew's Church and its manse were printed on the two-dollar bill from 1945 to 1975
